Give lacklustre borders a seasonal lift by adding plants that provide dramatic architectural impact. In this border, inspired by Andy Sturgeon’s garden at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, stunning purple and silver plants are blended to give an early summer highlight. Cool clumps of steely, sword like astelia leaves provide a year-round foil for the succession of early summer flowers. In May, loose clusters of drooping, pink-flushed bells of the ornamental onion, contrast the towering spires of purple and white bears breeches and the waving silvery wands of purple verbascum flowers. By June, the colourful irises in shades of indigo and violet demand attention

Planting tip: A newly planted border of herbaceous perennials can look a bitsparse until the plants start to fill out. You can overcome this by adding temporary seasonal bedding to add extra colour and interest during the first couple of seasons. This design will fit into a border 3m long by 1.5m wide
